I am taking up the post Living in Bali> Money (Part One) and Fulvio bad experience to write this article, I promised long ago.
Bali is a paradise. It 'a set of nice things about bad things, like any other place on earth.
Bali, however, is sold as a paradise, and sells well, it often generates expectations too high.
In fact even manages to be, a paradise, in two ways:
1) For the wealthy tourists who shoots two weeks in a small matrix of measurement and which agents to Politburo they see only the good things. A kind of Potemkin Village capitalist.
2) If, like me, get to know it well and knows how to avoid the most of the bad things and get the most beautiful ones.
What I write may be useful to those who have come in for a few weeks and for those who want to stay there for years, but I address those who want to live in Bali a few months, because that's what I did.
Thus, we see the bad things in Bali:
THE PLASTIC
Before the introduction of non-biodegradable, the Balinese threw everything on the floor and then let the Recycling Department (cows, dogs, insects, etc. ..) deal with it.
What was not edible small little fires burning in the romantic side of the road.
I obviously was not there at that time but I can imagine.
Then came the plastic and they have adjusted.
Throw the plastic to the side of the road, in the middle of the trees, in ditches and then burn everything.
It 'so that the romantic fires burning become smelly fumes emanating toxic fumes and blacks.
The smell of burning plastic is virtually everywhere, such as the coal in the Eastern bloc in 1990.
plastic bags instead escaped extermination happy travels around the island, brought by the winds, and they also have a piece of paradise, until the end when they die at sea and some dolphin or turtle.
What is the fault of plastic or Balinese who have not adjusted it does not matter.
It 'a shame and disgusting.
TRAFFIC
As he said in his debut Porchetta "And 'the traffeco probblema of the BBali, and traffic."
There are billions of motorbikes, cars and trucks so old that some predate the birth of Lord Shiva.
Spit out smoke pipes blacks who will arrive directly in the pancreas and become part of you.
Bali, well, you remain in the heart and pancreas.
Also, do not drive like Norwegians, but it must be said that the absence of rules following their logic, that once understood, allow a more tranquil.
It is usually a freestlye murderess and the only thing that saves us is the traffic itself: there's too much to allow the SUV to go fast.
Since it is recognized that the speed is a major cause of accidents, mostly taken from this equation, we believe the levels of dangerousness Italians where I, honestly, I have much more fear.
I prefer words to me in the ass is a scooter that a balinese Mini launched in the provincial Castellana 120 per hour.
Anyway: yes, very bad traffic in Bali.
Note: once you exit from the south, things calm down a lot.
TOURISM
Bali is too touristy.
But in my experience living seeds that brought both advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages: services, Internet access, several restaurants, Carrefour ....
Disadvantages: higher prices in tourist areas, too many surfers in the water traffic.
POLICE
Police in Bali has only one goal: to get money to the tourist.
Get a job as a policeman is very expensive, there are several characters to corrupt, so later you must return on investment.
The classic way is to stop tourists on scooters and say that something is wrong.
To me it has not created any problem because I have only stopped 3 times in 4 months and of those, once tried to get money: Lek's helmet was not up to standard.
Since I had calculated (one day I had nothing to do) that 66% of the Balinese do not take the helmet, I just said, laughing, that I live here and you must find another excuse.
I let it go.
That same cop I've seen several times on the same road, stopping exclusively tourists, preferably Australian, who are more respectful of authority.
Rule: be calm, gentle, and make him understand that covertly waste time with you. Maybe Spillane something, but if you have to earn. Because I'm lazy and moving groups of ATMs in Australia, usually give up the bone.
CORRUPTION
Corruption in Bali because there is so widespread that if it were missing, do not come out over the water from the taps.
The children spend their bribes to the father to take him to the zoo, promised favors for babies born a lucky day and what are the offerings to the gods that we find on the ground anywhere except religious corruption?
It 'a game, and win those who pay less.
Each is at the same time balinese victim and executioner. Who is higher than is the executioner of those who are lower down.
That said, in 4 months, I had only one problem:
the guy had disconnected the electricity meter of the empty house, before I arrived, and then told me that there was a fine to pay or that we could "to agree" with 100,000 rp (7 euros).
I sent by the landlord. Case closed.
DISHONEST '
The Balinese lie: the smile with which Berlusconi will say that the temple is closed for holidays and that we will bring them to another beautiful called "Indra Massage", is something spectacular. The only thing that can explain this phenomenon is that they do not believe that it is immoral to lie to a tourist.
Antidote: Do not ever believe him if you suspect you have even the slightest interest.
BUREAUCRACY
Definitely heavy, corrupt and inefficient. But luckily there I had to do.
KUTA
Kuta and Kuta area are what a lot of people believed to Bali. It 'nice to go there every so often to eat two steaks or make expenditures or maybe two jumps on the track ... but to make his base of Kuta or worse not to come out is suicide.
PAOLOTRIPMAITROP
Bali will be a better place when he is gone.
Muahh Muahh!
PRICES
If you will pocket the rubber motor, or need to buy roasted corn on the cob never ask the price.
The price must know.
A tire repair costs 5000 rp (or 35 euros) and an ear rp 3000 (or 21 euros).
Ask the service or good and just pay the money.
If you know understand that the price does not even try to cheat you.
If you do not ask for pay, respectively, 20,000 and 5000.
They are always a few and if you wanted to make the effort to learn the prices "pay and Tasi".
Of course, you can not always find them and sometimes you will pay more, but if you prefer to pay 20 euros honest in Italy, rather than 1 euro dishonest in Bali, get comfy.
People here do not take retirement, no health care and living hand to mouth.
The price of road there are no taxes, VAT and various bullshit.
If every time you run away from the two-euro portfolio and what makes you angry immensely because it is not right, maybe Bali is not for you.
I recommend you take these "disappointments" as a way to balance somewhat the huge economic gap that there is a kind of involuntary tip.
If it seems too tight is because it is, but we must always try to minimize the negative aspects in order to obtain the final result: a country enjoy.

December 3rd, 2010 at 15:16
It seems very interesting, and may open the eyes of those who have never traveled to that country (see me ...) -
They are truly "over-stressed" this rhythm of life in the North-East: work, work .... ... Pays for exploiting coop. (As in many Italian cities, I know), and then: the rent, taxes and the bills.
Results later this month? Nothing, zero, one month after it starts! Cute not ....? Venting ... I'm sorry I do not want absolutely annoying, really. But it's a sincere question: it may make sense to think of moving to Bali with the idea of changing lifestyle (ah .... I am Buddhist)? Another clarification: I know a little of certain aspects of life "less Western," because I have relatives in Bangladesh: so: less practical conveniences, such as: boiling water (to drink ...) and things like that ... ..! If you have time and opportunity to answer, I'd be very grateful, thank you, M.

dear,
I live and I love the island of Bali for a long time now but unfortunately the Italian bureaucracy does not allow me to live my paradise ...
I share many technical aspects but if I can afford does not have the right to challenge all Indonesians.
surely Kuta, Legian and Seminyak are very tourist places but also Italian tourists but for the first Australians always drunk and disrespectful of the local rules to create realities that may be encountered and in Legian poppies now devoted to them.
I know the immense good fortune to attend and have as many good friends in Indonesia definitely have a republic different from ours ... but just as corrupt ... I do not make a political issue ... but we are Italian. ... developed country. we have much to recover from them social and human.
I have invested in Indonesia and I definitely gained a lot more than in Italy by giving work to a good team of Indonesians.
I always say .... we are guests in another country ... Meanwhile, know and respect customs and traditions (religion) to get to know people ... and smile. which has been called false and affected ... is a sign of respect.
if there are a genius ... this country and these people make me a great courtesy .... YOU ARE AT HOME ... that during the months we have top of your tourism too arrogant of your traffic and your selfishness.
Bali is indeed a place for intelligent people who understand and love what it is ....
PLEASE ... .. AT HOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
MIKE AND HIS LOVE FOR INDONESIA
January 26th, 2011 at 10:56
Demis and Mike, I do not answer to the merits because in my opinion, as often happens in the post, you have not even read the whole article.
But if you read and confirmed it to me .. I respond with pleasure.
February 4th, 2011 at 17:31
Hi, while surfing looking for information on how you live in Bali (in my opinion lovely place despite its flaws, but also to Italy ... .. there ...) I read the speech I agree with Mike that a full course .... All the world is country .... I am a person that (work permitting) travels a lot and between places seen as the east is unique in its kind, is a wonderful place I love so much that having more information I would be willing to relocate .... but are not still continue documenting informed so ... .. If anyone is willing to help and I would be grateful.
Regarding the cons mentioned in the article "Living in Bali" I wanted to add that the East is an area that either love or is it better not to go.
The Orientals have ways of living, spirituality, culture very different from us that is why western
or "love it or hate it" ... ..
There are other very nice places like Mexico and applying the persons they are more like the Italians, they understand the language and everything is easy ... .. but Eastern spirituality and everything that follows is found only in these places ... ..
A kiss to all
February 5th, 2011 at 09:32
I still do not understand why if I write an article about the negative aspects of Bali, having written for years of positive and keep thinking that Bali is a wonderful place (and in fact now I go there for two months), I have to say that I sit at my house.
